Owner plans to launch website in September

Afrocentric Bookstore owner Desiree Sanders recently announced that she plans to close her store soon.

After nearly 18 years in business of selling nonfiction to fiction Black books, hosting book signings and discussions, Desiree Sanders, owner of Afrocentric Bookstore, decided to hang up her hat and close up shop for good.
Sometime next week or by early August, Sanders will close the store that has sat in the Bronzeville community at 47th and King Drive since 2003. Before opening in Bronzeville, Afrocentric previously had two other locations that included 234 S. Wabash and 333 S. State, in 1990 and 1997, respectively.

Clergy Activists Demand Answers Regarding Mishandling of Evidence for Missing Austin Teen

Six months and one week.
That’s how long 15-year-old Yasmin Acree has been missing. AWestside clergy activist group and members of Acree’s family said the police allegedly took two additional days before they confiscated a broken padlock from Acree’s home to use as evidence in the case.
The LEADERs Network has continued to demand answers from police not only about the whereabouts of Acree but also this time the alleged mishandling of evidence. On Monday, the group met for the first time with Chief Tina Skahill of the Chicago Police Department’s Internal Affairs Division at the group’s West Garfield headquarters on 22 N. Kildaire.
Rev. Cy Fields, president of the LEADERs, said that the internal affairs division promised that they would conduct the investigation of Acree’s case in a timely and thorough manner.

Douglas Speaks about Youth Violence at Grand Boulevard Meeting

Kobie Douglas, MD gives presentation about youth violence.
Kobie Douglas, MD was the guest speaker at Grand Boulevard Federation’s ninth Annual Meeting last Wednesday held at Urban League building at 4510 S. Michigan.
Douglas gave a presentation of youth violence and prevention. He works with 500 patients as and adult physiatrist for Community Mental Health Council at two offices.
Community Mental Health Council works with people who have Medicaid or no medical insurance.
Douglas acknowledged the progress GBF has done through Safety Net Works in the community.

Poll Shows Obama Raising $52 Million

In numbers released this week in two separate Gallup Polls, Obama’s support moved up among all voters and among African-American voters.
Among all voters his support was recorded at 47 percent, up from 46 percent.
The gain is statistically insignificant but it countered concerns that Obama’s campaign might have suffered from a recent spat with the Rev. Jesse Jackson, negative publicity from the cover of New Yorker magazine that portrayed him as a Muslim and concerns that he has swung to the right politically.

Saint Sabina Church to Serve as Gun Turn-In Site

The church will also present a $5,000 reward for anyone who reports gun runners, Father Michael Pfleger said.

Father Michael Pfleger wants guns turned in and gun runners exposed.
As the numbers of murders increase weekly, Saint Sabina Church members are demanding individuals to turn in their guns in an effort to put an end to this madness of violence that’s taking away innocent lives.
The church will join with other participating agencies on Saturday, July 26 to encourage residents to turn in their guns at the church located at 1210 W. 78th Pl. from 10 a.m. to 4 p.m.
Those that turn in a gun, will get a prepaid $100 Mastercard for each firearm, shotgun, rifle, automatic, semi-automatic, pistol or revolver and $10 for each BB-guns, air gun, and replica gun with no questions asked.

Mayor Visits Bethlehem Star M.B. Church to Announce Gun -Turn Program

Mayor Richard M. Daley and community supporters joined together to protest gun access in the neighborhood.
Mayor Richard M. Daley urged Chicagoans on Tuesday to give up their guns in exchange for a $100 prepaid MasterCard as part of the Chicago Alternative Policing Strategy (CAPS) fourth gun turn-in event to be held on July 26 at locations citywide.
“As we all know, gun violence is a national crisis, affecting cities and towns, large and small, in every part of our country. Gun violence is claiming the lives of too many victims, especially our young people. Every year in the United States more than 3,000 children and teenagers are killed by guns,” Daley said in a news conference held at Bethlehem Star M.B. Church, 9231 S. Cottage Grove., at which he was joined by members of the faith-based community who support CAPS in the initiative.
