Bears’ Hurd Facing Drug Charges

CHICAGO – Bears wide receiver Sam Hurd was jailed after authorities accused him of trying to set up a drug distribution network in the Chicago area and arrested him after he allegedly agreed to buy a kilogram of cocaine from an undercover agent.

According to the federal complaint, Hurd was arrested last Wednesday night after meeting with the agent at a Chicago restaurant. The complaint contends Hurd told the agent that he was interested in buying five to 10 kilograms of cocaine and 1,000 pounds of marijuana per week to distribute. AP

Resurgent Soul Singer Howard Tate Dies At 72

TRENTON, New Jersey – Soul singer Howard Tate, has died at age 72.

Tate died of natural causes at his apartment in Burlington City, county medical examiner’s spokesman Ralph Shrom said.

Tate was born in Macon, Georgia, and grew up in Philadelphia, where as a teenager he sang with the doo-wop group The Gainors. He was a rising star in the music world who later suffered through decades of such extreme darkness that his long-time producer figured he was dead before having career resurgence and receiving a Grammy nomination in 2004.

SOUTH BRUNSWICK, N.J. (AP) – Beyonce is featuring a New Jersey mobile home park in her next music video.

Residents of the Oakdale Mobile Home Park in South Brunswick on Tuesday watched as the Grammy-winning artist and crew filmed a video of “Party” from her latest album,  “4.”

The shoot included a vintage Airstream trailer and designers painted a trailer-park-themed mural.

Jalen Rose Gets 20 Days In Jail For Drunk Driving

BLOOMFIELD HILLS, Mich. (AP) – A Michigan judge has sentenced former NBA guard Jalen Rose to serve 20 days in jail for a drunken driving crash along a snowy suburban Detroit road in March.

Bloomfield Hills District Court Judge Kimberly Small sentenced the former University of Michigan standout to 92 days overall, with all but 72 days suspended. She also sentenced him to a year of probation.

Rose pleaded guilty to the charge. He told a judge in May that he had six martinis the night he veered off a West Bloomfield Township road.

A hospital test showed his blood-alcohol content as 0.12 percent, above Michigan’s legal driving limit of 0.08 percent.

Rose played 13 NBA seasons and is now an NBA analyst for ESPN.

Saxophonist Frank Foster Dies; Played With Basie

CHESAPEAKE, Va. (AP) – Frank Foster, a jazz saxophonist who played with the Count Basie Orchestra and composed the band’s hit, “Shiny Stockings,” has died. He was 82.

Foster died at his home in Chesapeake, Virginia, of complications from kidney failure, according to Cecilia Foster, his wife of 45 years.

Foster was recognized in 2002 by the National Endowment for the Arts as a Jazz Master, the nation’s highest jazz honor . In a statement expressing sadness at Foster’s death, NEA Chairman Rocco Landesman called him “an extraordinary saxophonist, composer, arranger, bandleader, and educator.”

Winehouse’s Death Lands Her Back On The Charts

NEW YORK (AP) – Death has landed Amy Winehouse back on the charts.

The British singer’s “Back to Black” album will re-enter the Billboard album chart at No. 9, with 37,000 albums sold in the United States in the past week. Those figures come from Nielsen SoundScan data released late Tuesday. Her debut album  “Frank” sold 7,000 copies. All but a fraction of those sales were digital downloads.

“Back to Black” hadn’t sold that many copies in three years.

Winehouse died of unknown causes at her London home on Saturday. She was 27, and had struggled with drug and alcohol addiction for years.

Wal-Mart Offers Video Streaming On Website

The world’s largest retailer started streaming many movies the same day they come out on DVD, in a second bid for a share of popular movie rental and streaming website Netflix Inc.’s business and just two weeks after Netflix announced new price increases.

Wal-Mart Stores Inc. bought video-streaming service Vudu.com 18 months ago and now offers 20,000 titles that can be viewed on almost any device with Internet access, from computers to televisions to Sony’s PlayStation3 and other Blu-Ray disc players.

Singer R. Kelly Has Emergency Surgery On Tonsil

CHICAGO (AP) – A spokesman for R. Kelly says the R&B singer is in the hospital after emergency throat surgery.

Kelly publicist Allan Mayer said Wednesday that doctors drained an abscess on one of Kelly’s tonsils on Tuesday and that the singer will be “laid up indefinitely” at Chicago’s Northwestern Memorial Hospital.

Mayer says Kelly had been complaining of throat pain recently and was rushed to the hospital after a throat exam.

Rapper DMX Released From An Arizona Prison

PHOENIX (AP) – Rap star DMX has been released from an Arizona state prison after serving an extra week behind bars for failing a drug test while incarcerated.

Arizona Department of Corrections spokesman Bill Lamoreaux says family members were at the facility in Yuma to pick up the multi-platinum selling recording artist Tuesday.

DMX, whose real name is Earl Simmons, was given a year in prison in December after his probation was revoked for failing to submit to drug testing and driving on a suspended license.

The 40-year-old Simmons was credited with 117 days he had already served.

Simmons had been earning 20 cents an hour as a porter.

CBS On Top In Ratings Week With Reruns, Reality

NEW YORK (AP) – The Nielsen Co. says CBS can claim a dozen of last week’s top 20 shows, but in prime time overall, NBC wasn’t far behind.

CBS was powered by its strong slate of dramas, along with “60 Minutes” and three editions of  “Big Brother,” according to figures released Tuesday by Nielsen.

But NBC got a boost from “America’s Got Talent,” which seized the top two slots.

For the week, CBS averaged 6 million viewers in prime time, compared to NBC’s 5.2 million. Fox and ABC rounded out the top four networks.

As usual, NBC’s “Nightly News” was the most-watched evening newscast.
